Hardwood Floors in Florida: Do They Hold Up?
Wood floors and Florida humidity have a complicated relationship. Here's when hardwood works — and when it doesn't.
By M&V Flooring & Remodeling Inc. ·

Hardwood floors are timeless, warm, and add real resale value — so it's no surprise homeowners ask whether they can have them in Florida. The short answer: yes, but the type of wood and the way it's installed matter enormously in our climate.
Solid vs. engineered hardwood
Solid hardwood is a single piece of wood that expands and contracts with humidity. In Florida's swings, that movement can cause cupping and gaps — especially over concrete slabs or in homes near the Gulf. Engineered hardwood is built from cross-layered plies that resist that movement, making it far better suited to Tampa Bay homes while still giving you a genuine wood surface.
Our recommendation
For most Pinellas County homes, engineered hardwood is the safer, longer-lasting choice. We reserve solid hardwood for stable, well-conditioned interiors away from moisture sources.
Where hardwood works in Florida
- Air-conditioned living and dining rooms that stay within a stable humidity range
- Bedrooms and hallways away from water sources
- Above-grade installations with a properly prepared, moisture-tested subfloor
Where we steer homeowners away from wood — bathrooms, laundry rooms, beach-level slabs — waterproof LVP or tile is the smarter pick. Our broader guide on the best flooring for Florida humidity covers the alternatives in detail.
Keeping wood floors looking great
- Run your AC and aim to keep indoor humidity in a stable range
- Wipe up spills quickly and use felt pads under furniture
- Use a wood-safe cleaner — never a wet mop or steam
- Add rugs at entries to catch sand and grit
