LVP vs. Tile vs. Laminate: How to Choose in Pinellas County
Three of the most popular floors, compared head-to-head for cost, durability, and Florida-friendliness.
By M&V Flooring & Remodeling Inc. ·

Luxury vinyl plank, tile, and laminate are three of the most popular floors we install across Pinellas County — and three of the most common sources of confusion. They can look similar in a showroom but perform very differently in a real Florida home. Here's a straight comparison to help you choose.
Quick comparison
- Water resistance: Tile (best) → LVP (waterproof) → Laminate (weakest)
- Comfort underfoot: LVP & laminate (warmer, softer) → Tile (hard, cool)
- Durability: Tile & LVP (excellent) → Laminate (good, but vulnerable to water)
- Typical cost: Laminate (lowest) → LVP (mid) → Tile (highest installed)
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP)
LVP is the best all-rounder for most Tampa Bay homes. It's fully waterproof, comfortable, realistic, and quick to install. It handles humidity, pets, and kids without complaint, which is why it's our most-requested whole-home floor. We explain why in our guide to the best flooring for Florida humidity.
Tile
Porcelain and ceramic tile are the most water-resistant and longest-lasting option, and they stay cool in summer. Tile is the right call for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and entryways. The trade-offs are a harder surface and higher installed cost because of the labor involved. For wet areas like showers, see our bathroom remodeling page.
Laminate
Modern laminate looks great and costs less, with a tough wear layer that resists scratches. Its weakness is water: most laminate has a fiberboard core that swells if it gets soaked. In dry bedrooms and living rooms it's a smart budget choice; in Florida bathrooms and kitchens we usually recommend LVP instead.
Our rule of thumb
Wet or humid room? Choose tile or waterproof LVP. Dry room on a tight budget? Laminate is fine. Whole-home consistency with the least worry? LVP wins more often than not.
